An engaging and educational Orienteering Workshop was successfully conducted at Young Ladies High School with the objective of introducing students to the fundamentals of orienteering and developing their navigation and decision-making skills. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across different grade levels, reflecting a strong interest in this dynamic and intellectually stimulating outdoor activity.
A total of 48 students from Grades 5 to 7 and 54 students from Grades 8 and 9 actively participated in the workshop. The sessions were structured to suit the learning levels of each group, ensuring age-appropriate understanding and engagement.
The workshop focused on the core elements of orienteering, including map reading, understanding symbols, basic compass usage, route planning, and navigation strategies. Students were introduced to how maps represent real-world features and how to interpret them effectively for navigation.
One of the key highlights of the workshop was the hands-on map-making activity. Students participated in creating simple maps of the school environment, where they learned to observe surroundings, identify landmarks, and represent them using standard orienteering symbols. This activity enhanced their observational skills and provided practical exposure to the technical aspects of orienteering.
For the senior group (Grades 8 and 9), additional emphasis was placed on decision-making, route selection, and time efficiency, helping them understand the competitive aspect of the sport. They were encouraged to think critically and choose the most efficient routes during navigation tasks.
The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion, where students shared their experiences and reflected on their learning. The session also highlighted the importance of orienteering in developing problem-solving skills, physical fitness, and environmental awareness.
Overall, the workshop was a great success and served as a valuable platform to introduce students to a new sport while fostering teamwork, confidence, and strategic thinking. The school looks forward to organizing more such initiatives to further promote orienteering and encourage active student participation in outdoor learning experiences.
